Friday night skating in Athens

Postby gmournos » Wed Jun 03, 2009 4:40 pm

Is possible...

The cyclists(bicycles) are riding around town every friday. This is relatively new, it has been happening two yrs now.

They cyclists start from thisio (in the centre of Athens, near Acropolis) at 21:30.
The ride is about 20-30 km.
There is no police escort. The principle is that there are enough bikes to close the streets and block away cars.
The pace is fast but not too fast. There are no variable speed zones like in the London FNS.
The ride is mostly on streets. Small part is on pavements (in places where the pavements are very broad and mass cycling on them is possible).

We are a small group of skaters living in Athens, Greece.
http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/ ... 308&ref=ts (not all members are active)
We recently started joining this event.

Personally, I am an average skater (still cannot do a proper grapevine). I joined the last two rides and I didn't have any problems. The last ride's highlight was the night swim that followed.

I thought u might want to know and skate with us next time u r visiting Athens.

There is no place in Athens to rent skates if you cannot bring yours. We have some repository of old fitness skates which we can lend for free, but we cannot promise we can always find something appropriate...

PS: The cyclists also have a forum (in case someone can read Greek)

Wow, that's excellent news, as the last time I was over there (with skates), I ended up cursing both the pavement (small mosaics) and the crazy drivers.

I'll give Athens-on-wheels another chance.

Give Athens-on-wheels another chance definitely.
The pavements in the historical centre are inappropriate to skate on, but in the rest of the city centre they are not much different to London.
Plus they are always dry. Additionally, if u have to drive on the street for a while no police patrol car will come over to stop u, like they often do in London. Chaos can also have benefits...

Nevertheless, the city centre and the street along the coast dont offer a lot of variety. But the cycling rides do.
I posted only about the Friday night ride because it happens at a consistent time and place and you can locate it without speaking Greek, but there are several others in the summer.

This week only there are four.
* monday, critical mass ride (happens first Monday of the month) http://criticalmass.gr/
* wednesday northern Athens cyclists http://groups.google.com/group/podilato ... 021?hl=el#
* friday, freeday ride http://www.podilates.gr/node/4933
* saturday night ╬▒╬╗╬À¤ä¤î╬│╬▒¤ä╬┐╬╣(stray cats) almost full moon ride http://alitogatoi.blogspot.com/

Athens in the summer is becoming a paradise for long distance skating. Pity is that there are not so many skaters. In every ride there are only 3-5 skaters but as more people learn numbers might grow higher...

Well, I will not be checking the serpentine road forum. I just made a post to let you know.
If u r ever in Athens in the summer, and u have difficulty locating the events email me at gmournos AT yahoo DOT com to help.

Despite our recent good weather, this makes me insanely jealous!
Well as least we have the Pool at Chanteloupe after Le Mans.

Haven't heard this nickname for quite sometime gummidge :)

Well, not too bad. Rolling stone that I am, I might find a home in Athens afterall.
Kitesurfing is pretty good here and these bike rides are mostly rewarding for any skater...

Skating seems to be slowly becoming trendier in Greece.
Went to last Freeday (equivalent to FNS but for cyclists, distances from 40-80 km) with another 25 skaters (and 2000 cyclists).
Unlike 2 yrs ago, when I was alone.

A group of skaters travelled 504 km (Athens -> Thessaloniki) in 7 days in the summer.

There is a marathon (Athens->Marathonas) being organized for october, I think.

I would have thought scuba diving would be the sport of choice in Greece at the moment, given everyone's propensity to jump in de Nile.
