Skaters! Please HELP keep our roller rink open!

Postby Becca » Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:35 pm

SKATERS! Please help! We have a week to save the GYSO roller rink.
Due to few complaints about noise (the disco closes at 10pm on fridays and saturdays and 8pm on weekdays), Brighton RockersÔÇÖ new Shoreham venue is under licence review, and we need as many people to write to the following address or email supporting the positive aspects of ROLLER CENTRAL. Please take to time to fire off a letter or email of support otherwise not only will we lose our venue, but the city community will lose a fantastic family resource, and us kids, both young and old, will lose a fantastic place to skate. The address is Teresa Cuerva, Licencing, Adur district council, Civic Centre, Ham road,Shoreham,BN43 6PR or email demsers@adur.gov.uk

Points you might want to bring up in your email/letter: It is encouraging kids into exercise, it's a safe space for their interest, they're in partnership with "Fit for life" the NHS campain to reduce childhood and adult obesity.

Our Facebook page about saving the rink is here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Rol ... 7097346304

Yes, please do email/write to Adur District Council in support of Roller Central. This is a great venue, it'd be such a shame if it was forced to close just as it was getting established. The people running it are really committed and are trying to cater for all sorts of different skating activities at a time when skating is going through a resurgence and Roller Derby is taking off. People need somewhere to skate.

The complaints about noise do seem to be completely unreasonable. It's not a residential area as the building is a disused warehouse surrounded by boatyards, factory units, a yacht club and the like. As Becca says, the skating sessions finish quite early and the music is never loud. It's next to a busy main road and there's a pub opposite so I don't really think Roller Central has much effect on the overall noise level in the area.

For anyone thinking of going down, Friday nights have better music than the other nights.
