Health & safety gone...bloody stupid

Postby dodgy » Sat Dec 24, 2011 2:29 pm

Advice for once a year ice skaters from RoSPA:

"If you fall, he recommends tucking your arms in and rolling - rather than putting you hand out to stop the fall, which could damage the hand or be hit by another skater's blades."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16318663

Great advice for protecting the wrists...but not so good for the head, shoulders, arms, spine, face, life in general etc.

I'd like to invite the chairman of the society, Prof Graham Smith to Viccy Park to demonstrate this technique on concrete while I video it for posterity and much youtube hilarity.

Really? You don't put your hands down?

This was the exact same advice from my (ice) figure skating coach, too.

After scaring my family witless by sustaining a severe concussion* while skating on ice, I started wearing wrist guards (a whole £10 worth) and putting my hands out if I fell - and tell anyone else who wants to go on ice to do the same! Wrists usually heal, brains are trickier to fix.

* Afterwards for 2 days I had a memory span of 5 to 15 mins, and early-on couldn't remember my own name or what year it was. Later on I found I'd lost at least 2 whole weeks of memory from before it happened.

Well, ice skates can slice through skin (google zednik if you don't believe me - but for the love of our lord jesus christ please don't), wheels can't do any harm... Except in the case of my mate Nick where I ran over and broke his finger.

It doesn't matter as long as you style it out.

I try not to, if you're going at slow speeds, like slalom then yeah it's kind of unavoidable when falling forwards, you need to put your hands out, but if you've got a bit of speed then rolling is the best option imo
