Skate events/places in the UK (for a magazine in China)

Postby Eugene » Wed Aug 15, 2012 9:53 am

Hey folks,
I took part in the Beijing Friday Night Skate recently and have been approached by a Chinese inline skating magazine (66er) to put in an article on the UK skate scene and some photographs - the wording is 'if you could provide us an article and some photos, which illustrate the current situation of roller-skating in UK and some photos'.

I know about Serp Road, the London streetskates and a little bit about the street skating/slalom stuff that goes on in and around London, plus obviously this excellent web forum. I just wondered if people could post here anything that would go well in this article, for example regular or annual skate events/competitions outside London (Brighton, etc?) and any websites that would be good to direct people to, for if/when they choose to visit the UK and come skating.

Cheers
Eugene

SkateLondon might make for some nice content, here is the press release.

===================

SkateLondon 2012

Date: 17 ÔÇô 19th August 2012
Venue: Westway Sports Centre, 1 Crowthorne Road, London, W10 6RP

The UK annual International level Freestyle Slalom competition, drawing inline skaters from across the globe to battle it out on the cones. They will be performing incredible tricks around sets of cones to impress the judges. Excitement builds as the skaters raise the difficulty of their tricks to ensure a place in the grand final. Cones will fly as the pressure builds.

SkateLondon 2012 is proudly brought to you by the UK Freestyle Slalom Association (UKFSA) and is sponsored by Slick Willies Skate Shop and Seba Skates.

Everybody who owns a pair of skates or is considering taking it up is encouraged to come and spectate, or for those with a little more confidence, we are still accepting registrations.

Events at SkateLondon 2012

Battle - Participants are put in groups of 3-5 skaters and take it in turns to slalom in the cones before a panel of judges. The judges select the top 2 skaters to proceed to the next round.

Classic - This is the original form of competition, where participants are awarded points for a 90 second individual performance using music of their choice.

Speed Slalom ÔÇô For even faster paced action, the speed slalom competition will see skaters race through the cones as fast as possible. The best timings will advance to next rounds. Final rounds will be based on a Knock-Out system.

Slides ÔÇô For each run, skaters are awarded points for trick difficulty, number of switches and distance covered while sliding. Each skater has three runs per round, at the end of which their scores are added up to see which skaters will progress to the next round.

Jumps ÔÇô Will consist of jumping from ground level. The high jump bar's height will be gradually increased. Skaters not able to clear the stick after 3 attempts will be dropped. The competition's winner will be the skater able to achieve the highest height.

There's an active skate scene in Nottingham:

- The main club is called the NottinghamSkaters (NS for short).
- The associated skate school, run by NS members, is Skate Focus.
- The NS also runs the Nottingham Wednesday Night Skate.
- The NS grew out of BladeSoc, the University of Nottingham Rollerblading Society.
- For the last six years, the NS have run a slalom battle competition (previously BattleUK, now Battle Nottingham). BattleUK was the first slalom battle competition and paved the way for many of the world's big slalom battle competitions.
- And, separate from the NS (but have been coached by), are Nottingham's two roller derby teams, The Nottingham Hellfire Harlots and The Nottingham Roller Girls.

Yell if you want more details.

There are quite a few roller discos about. Some are permanent (daily) Colchester, Derby, Welwyn Garden City and there is another one in Lincolnshire I have been to. Others are weekly, like Renaisance Rooms, Wembley, if it's still going.

There are loads of clubs around the country, most either aimed at kids or particular (indoor) skating disciplines such as hockey (3 kinds) or artistic. Some groups as organised as Camberley and Nottingham others don't even have websites. You can get most of the information through www.brsf.co.uk

Rollerderby is huge now. Though it's not a participation sport for visitors but makes an excellent spectator activity. Some may have rollerdiscos afterward.

Brighton has a street skate.
