Calories Burned while street skating

Postby GumbieBEN » Wed Sep 12, 2012 4:48 pm

So.. What does everyone think they burn while skating,.. Am doing a two month calorie controlled period... Using myfitnesspal app.
For inline skating it reckons 913 calories per hour, which just seems ridiculously high t o me. According to the app I'm going to burn over 2500 calories cycling into and doing the LondonSkate... That's almost a whole bottle of Jaegermeister!

On the other hand, I'm loosing slightly more weight than the app is predicting, so maybe I did burn that much last week!?

There are so many factors- the size of your wheels, the state of your bearing and technique.

Actually Ben for you that's probably right ;)

I don't think I burn any, because almost any skate ends up at the pub or going somewhere for food, and I consume more calories than I could possibly have burnt :)

Judging by distended morning belly:
Friday night marshalling burns more calories than 3 pints of real ale
Wednesday night puntering burns less calories than 3 pints of real ale

The more crap at skating you are, the more you burn. If anyone wants to lose weight on street skates then they're not fast enough to raise a sweat if you have an efficient technique and have reasonable fitness. Stay rubbish and struggle to keep up and you'll lose weight so long as you don't drink it all back on. (b)

I found this:

Somebody who weighs 81.6 Kilogram will burn over 1,225 calories in an hour of competitive skating
68 Kilogram burns 816 calories per hour rollerblading
average male, weighing 150 pounds, will burn roughly 680 calories per hour while running at a modest 6 mph

I would suggest (on average) about 450 - 550 for an lfns... Or LS. I'd agree that 900 seems very high... I'd probably half the amount the app says you would burn running for an hour for a skate - as route check at speed could be done in 35 - 45min (at speed).

Yeah, I would even tend towards the lower end of that. Continuous skating a la marathons and street skating are worlds apart. You can roughly break a 2hr streetskate down to probably 60% moving, 40% stationary, and of that 60% moving time, rolling/coasting time might be 10 - 15%.
What's more, distance covered is more important than speed. Faster skaters (eg marshals) will have more resting time, more coasting time and tend to have more efficient form, for the same distance covered.
