where are you more comfortable? Road or Pavement

Postby Joniquai » Thu Mar 25, 2004 8:07 pm

When travelling at speeds (I'm no expert but I reckon usually around 15mph+) I will more often than not feel more comfortable on roads, I just wondered what other people think? I'm not on about skating in groups or organised street skates, just your average miz around town or whatever!

I feel safer because I needn't worry about people walking dogs, car doors opening, cars reversing out of their driveways etc. Infact I see myself much as a cyslist in this sense. However, motorists can never see my point that I am safer on the roads!

Well, it depends on surfaces, conditions, environment in general - how many people around, how much traffic, even sometimes night time or daytime!

Too many variables, as my old Spectrum 48k used to tell me.

I am kinda with you. Feel safer on the road most of the time.
But you do have to jungle between the two to avoid getting run over.

Depends on the situation - my speed, traffic volume and speed on road/pavement, quality and width of road/pavement, etc. etc.

Yeah, early in the morning, I feel better on the roads since they are smoother and less trafic, but in the daytime, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Prefer the road but I'm comfy on either and skate both as appropriate.

Well I thouhgt about this yesterday on the way to the rollerdisco since we skated largely on the pavement and I thought to my self "Id prefer to be on the road" where as normally I would think the other way I normally alternate anyway on the road mostly but if a bus is trying to stop on top of me I jump up on to the pavment.

Pavement unless it's really quiet.. but then that goes with my skills level... the better a skater you are, the more likely you are to be confident on roads in whatever conditions.

Road.... cars hold little fear for me, but I hate pavements, always scared shit less that some pedestrian is gonna jump out somewhere.

A Parisian complaining about road surfaces....

Personally I use a mix of pavement and road depending on conditions.

What scares me most about traffic is that drivers look out of their window and see someone in a vaguely upright position and assume that you are a pedestrian travelling at 2mph, they never seem to consider the fact that you might be going at closer to 15mph.

exactly mt fear too ben- that or some stupid git reversing their car out of their driveway and not looking out for anything but cars!

I too use a mix of pavements and roads, but I meant to express that I am typically more comfortable at high speeds on roads. Of course there are exceptions (i.e deserted pavements, high speed roads etc....) but lets not get bogged down by the little details!

More comfortable on the road usually. I always worry about peds stepping out of doorways, and skating quickly on the pavement is intimidating for people who're not expecting it, understandably. I feel vulnerable in traffic though so it all depends on conditions. Backroads at night is my favourite.

90% of the pavements are in such bad condition it's just hard work. I prefer the roads but when I spot a black cab I fear for my life.
