Seba Carbons - are they still being made?

Postby Becca on Mon Jul 26, 2010 12:54 pm

After years of wanting Seba Highs, but grumbling at the fact they don't fit my feet (after a few minutes in Blue Room with them on, I was ready to rip my own feet off as it was taking too long to unlace them), I finally tried on some Carbons. I tried on a friend's size 5 Carbons yesterday, and ooohhhhh, they are nice!

But, the rumour that I've heard (someone at Blue Room actually said this) is that the carbons aren't being made any more, and that what is out there now is all there is. Does anyone know if this is true? I can't afford them right now, and realistically won't be able to get them until about November, but I'll be rather pissed off in November I find that there are no more in my size available.

Didn't everyone go and buy those Powerslide ones instead?

Some people did, but if you skate up Serp Rd you'll see more slalomers wearing Sebas than Powerslides.
Anyway, Powerslides don't fit me properly. And Evos are fugly (although S3s are pretty).

Don't worry, they still make them, I know for a fact a friend of mine has ordered them about a month ago and I've seen him skate in them, so...

Oh, and this is the 2010 catalogue, so you can see for yourself ;)

Oh, and the sizes available: it says 34-47, and I'm not sure what a 5 is, but I just checked my Igors, and they say UK 4, which is 37, so a 5 should be available.

I was told the same thing last week.
The trend seems to be toward ultra-slimline skates that you have to throw away when the integral liner wears out.

Cool, thanks. That's a relief!

Hmmm... I wonder how this rumour started then.

That is strange. I mean, Carbons are basically Highs, made from more advanced material, there's not much difference beyond it. Improved shell stiffness means they should be less comfortable for most people. Maybe it's the size that makes difference? I doubt it's about weight, i talked with guy who ride them both and he says it's only slight difference - shell weights less and composite shells aren't heavy to begin with, rest of the hardware is the same.

That's actually easy to understand choice in most cases, slimmer skates equal less weight and easier to do tricks with them (Look at Highs in sizes bigger than EU43, they are HUGE, i wonder how people fit between cones in them). Also, HC Evo are semi custom, you can heat them in oven and fit to your foot for better control. And getting rid of separate liner means more direct and efficient power transfer. Yeah, one-piece skate have worse longevity, but only people i know that ride them are sponsored or such crazy about skating that it doesn't hurt them they have to get new pair almost every year, they would do it anyway, even with skates with replaceable liners.

The same was true for the friend whose skates I tried on - she tried Highs and they just didn't fit properly, and then she tried Carbons and they were great. I thought it was weird too, as they seem so similar.

I was also going to say that it seems strange that the fit between the two models would be that much different. They do look almost identical.

Whilst they do look almost identical, I think that the different materials they are made out of make a lot of difference to the internal shape of the boot, I think the plastic version is much thicker. I have a pair of the High and a pair of the Carbon, whilst I liked the high they did used to be very tight and I couldn't sit around with my skates on for a long amount of time (like when at a competition waiting to skate) as my feet would go to sleep or would get cramps, but for skating they were fine. The Carbons however are like a pair of slippers, still very tight, but also very comfortable.

I can confirm what Phils says: I have old Seba High and bought the Seba Carbon.

The Seba Carbon length is the same -> the same size is OK but the carbon are much wider so wide that with my long narrow feet I couldn't get a good control with the Seba Carbon.

I sold the Carbon to somebody who couldn't wear the Seba High because they were too narrow for his feet and the carbon fits him perfectly.

There is another difference between the carbon and the Seba High: the mounting blocks for the frame are not at the same place -> to place the frame on the Carbon so that it is centered as on the High, the frame must be moved one row of holes to the front (i.e. the bolts must be placed in the next row of holes to the rear).

I went to Hawaii Surf in Paris on friday. They also said that Seba Carbons are no longer being made, so it appears that the rumour is true. Boooo!

You might be ok - a few places have some left still. Proline still has them in stock in sizes 6 -12. You'd better be quick though!
Nowhere has a size 5 though.
