inkh0rn, what you need is getting better liners. I don't get RB why they do not upgrade their liners. I mean, their ankle padding is really low quality and wears off in no time. Either get FR-liners, maybe even Balance. Or get the new Powerslide Vi-liners (heat moldable and superb padded). Although it will be available only later this year (between September to November 2012).

Vi-skates,

Trust me, I've never felt any better ankle padded liners so far. (y) And I am not referring exclusively to thickness. The foam is special.

Ankle pain is unfortunately common issue. I get rid over it using different liners, but I know some people who managed to overcome this problem doing a shell mod (smoothing and lowering a bit the edge above cuff bolt, a similar concept to this Salomon FSK mod: http://www.londonskaters.com/review-sal ... ations.htm ), heat-molding shell with hair dryer (takes time, but it's possible to make shell a bit wider in this area), adding thicker insole that lifts heel a bit, one guy cut the liners and removed a bit of foam, it worked for him but I don't recommend it. Fusion liners aren't that bad actually, they are simply shaped for people who have high instep and ankles.

First thing I would try is adding another/thicker insole, and maybe yoga mat sole under the liner, like in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... pyqhSM7L3I

It will lift your ankles in the shell, I'm kind of using this "yoga-mat" sole but mine is made from a foam-rubber, 4mm thick. I cut it to fit the whole shell and it works great because not only ankle problems are gone (different liners did the job in 80% I would say, this mod rest of it) but I have more comfortable footbed, and rubber prevent sliding of the liner inside the shell! It sit in place like it's glued :)

Or just simply hunt ebay for aggressive Salomon skates, liners in these are incredible and fit Fusion/Solo shell so well you think they are made for each other!

Further update: have done a few fitness skates around caravan site, 5-7 miles or so each time. Circuit is smooth asphalt with 7 speed bumps of varying sizes which I jump, about 1/2 mile long.

After yesterday's & today's sessions I noticed...no ankle pain! Whatsoever!

Fingers & frames crossed ;)

At the moment it's Kizer Powerblading frames or nothing. Only 255mm UFS frames are the ones made by Rollerblade, which you already have.

Kizer level 2 is coming soon. It will be 76mm max, but longer and lower (so, more stable), with a groove between wheels. Basically aggressive frame that allows comfortable city skating.

Bad news, I'm afraid. I have a problematic left ankle anyway and the rubbing from the boot shell totally inflamed an old injury, leaving me unable to skate without f@@king ludicrous pain...

I clearly do have the low ankles that Herb mentioned in his review. Bugger! Rather than mess about trying to fix this issue, I'm just going to go back to Sebas - for all their shortcomings, the boots don't cause the same problems for my shape feet.

Thankfully the mate I'd sold my FR2s to wasn't getting on with them and was happy to return them...until I can sort this problem out, the Fusions are retired :(.

Update: Having left them a few weeks, I put them on for a blast round the estate and remembered how much I love these skates! All seemed well for 2 sessions...almost...then the ankle pain returned. With a vengeance :x .

It's only my left ankle, just to the inside, from the underneath to the side. The pain is sharp there but radiates from there up and down the front of my ankle the worse it gets - it becomes so sensitised as soon as I put the boots on it's excruciating.

There is no problem whatsoever with the RIGHT boot. What the heck? I've closeley examined/compared each boot and there is no material difference I can see.

I did 3 hours on my Seba FR2's today with only minor discomfort, and even that was because the Fusions have inflamed the pain.

I get no ankle pain whatsoever in my low-cut quads (which is why I refuse to commit 110% to inline only...also quads are cool, dude ;)).

Aaaaargh! I'm going to try the sanding approach that RB and alexels have suggested. Although I don't see how it will make a difference unless I think the shell out to near-transparency...come on RB, what gives???

Further update - I'm posting this in this thread and Herb's - hope it is useful.

I tried the boot shell sanding - using sandpaper of varying grits, and even some sanding stones on drill bits with my cordless drill. Had some success, but made absolutely no difference to the pain. Bugger!

Rang RB's UK distributor, TKC Sales, to speak to their RB specialist - Ian Hendry, apparently - to ask his advice and whether they could do anything for me. I'd rang them almost 2 weeks ago and been assured Ian would call me the next day - he didn't. Someone did ring last week to explain he was at a trade show and would contact me in the next couple of days, so I felt reassured.

A week later...still no phone call!So I rang them again on Tuesday. Was told Ian was 'in a meeting', so I compained and he was interrupted to speak to me. A very nice guy, very understanding etc., but ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE SHELL ANKLE PAIN PROBLEM. Oh dear. He had no awareness of this site, of Herb's review, nor was he aware of the comments made on the RB site and replied to by 'Sami' (who apparently is a marketing guy at their head office in whatever country that's in). So I filled him in and he promised to email Sami that day and get back to me.

No reply as yet. Not what I'd call good service so far, but I await with bated breath...doesn't inspire confidence. No wonder RB availability in the UK is so poor.

Anyway, I decided to try Herb's insole suggestion and found some spare practice silencing pads for my drumkit - thick foam rubber, about 7mm, quite high-density. I cut two insole-shaped sections and put them under the liners. I then cut two triangular pieces and wedged them between the liner and the inner side of the boot shell, around the cuff rivet area, on each skate.

Took them for a blast tonight and...NO ANKLE PAIN! Ta-daa! A bit uncomfy as my foot's a bit squashed but that should ease as the foam compresses. A solution of sorts for now.

Cheers Herb and Alex - you guys should be seeking consultancy fees from RB ;). I'll make sure I tell Mr Hendry - if he gets back to me...

Roll on amigos :)
