any ankle training tips..???

Postby logicalguy » Tue Mar 09, 2010 7:33 pm

So do the experts in here have any training/exercise tips to train the ankles? Maybe some things I could to to improve ankle strength and (more importantly) ankle flexibility and overall balance?? Well, specifically for slalom but even general tips would be awesome.

Spending time standing on one foot is quite good for building ankle strength.

You need balls though. ;)

Try tracing the alphabet with your ankle.

Skating is quite good for ankle strength.

Skate with all your body over one skate and the other one inline behind on its toe wheel. If the skate behind feels unstedy then put more presher on it. Then swap so the other skate have your body over it.
Keeping balance will work your ankle, and inprove your skating.

Yes, thanks, but I do that already. It is a terrific exercise :)

Ha ha, I am definitely going to try this - with tennis balls, though. Don't want to go out and buy special massage balls just for this. thanks for the link; it is brilliant!!

Awesome suggestion - will give my ankle joints a thorough workout. So how would you do it - one foot at a time? Just in the air or on the ground? With or without skates??

Sure, but I want something I can do in the gym or on my room. I can't be skating everyday, but I can surely spend 5 minutes a day training my ankles!!

Good suggestion. Think I will do this everytime I skate as part of a warm-up routine.

Well, yes but I want to do something extra as well, as I can't afford the time to practice skating every day.

The best way to build ankle strength, flexibility and balance for skating is to skate.

I sit at my desk, lift both legs up at 90 degrees and trace alphabet with both feet simultaneously (The left foot being a mirror of the right).

I have found moving from minimal ankle support (Hockey skates) to full cuffs (Evos) my ankles are not as strong as they used to be through skating

Standing on one foot is good, to make it progressively harder, do it standing on a pillow and/or with your eyes closed

I've not tried standing on a pillow but I do one legged calf raises, I also try to stand on one foot on my toes/ball of the foot for as long as I can, that really makes the calf burn.
