Yes, it's time to turn the lights out

Postby Steve » Thu Nov 28, 2013 7:59 pm

Traffic has reduces so much lately that describing it as a trickle would be an exaggeration. It was good while it lasted but no point in letting for forum limp on any longer. We've had some good discussions over the years and I'm certainly going to miss the glory days.

The doors will stay open for a little while longer. Over the coming weeks the individual forums will gradually be locked. Grab whatever you want while its still there. The intended shut-down date is 19th Feb 2014 - on the 10th anniversary of the forum opening. It feels quite fitting.

..... because actualy it is shit.. it is impersonal, theres too much shit, too many adverts and is massivly hard to find anything from the past or follow threads... too many people can read your stuff. It is in a microcosm all thats wrong with stuff nowadays... very sad...

Judging by the current popular web sites it seems that attention span is generally very short. Far less interest in having discussion and blurting out 140 characters of utter bollocks is the mode. I suppose either forums aren't cool any more or just skating ones. Red Locker appears to be going in a similar direction.

Some hobby forums I am a member of are the same and they are pretty specialist. Not a lot of new members there either.... Skating itself seems to be in decline or it certainly feels that way on the street skates. Lots of old faces disapear with not as many new ones appearing. The debate about red locker continues. Facebook has some useful features but a lot of drawbacks. I remember whiling away many a wroking day on Serpentine Road...

Facebook is good to dip into. You can nose around when you get bored with no real commitment. There most be other things that people are doing. I can't imagine that facebook can use up huge amounts of time.

How much has skating declined?

Not sure about the LFNS but the stroll is getting about 70-100 skaters and Wedsnesdays was only around 100-150 this season I reckon, sometimes less.... Lots less old faces for sure... Banned from the Vic en mass as well...

A sad day indeed!
Though, I've also witnessed how FB has stolen the traffic from venerable forums. It seems this is the way the world is going.

I know I haven't been around much these last few years, though I have dipped in now and then. Ironically, I shall keep in touch via the devil's medium that is FaceBook.

Thanks Steve for all the memories!

I think the smart phone killed Serp Road, I used to be totally addicted to Serp Rd and read almost every post when I started skating, but maybe the decline for me says more about my attention span.

Very sad regardless. Thank you Serp rd for the many friends I've made over the last ? years. I'm sad to see you go.

I'd like to thank everyone who's spent so much of their time moderating posts, trying to keep order and laughing at me behind my back in the private forums :P

Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish!
